구글은 2003년부터 보그(Borg)를 내부 워크로드 매니저(WLM)로 사용하기 시작했습니다. 2014년 구글은 보그로부터 얻은 노하우를 활용한 오픈 소스 컨테이너 오케스트레이션 플랫폼으로 쿠버네티스를 공개하였습니다. 이제 쿠버네티스는 포춘지가 선정한 100대 기업 중 71% 이상의 기업에서 사용하는 세계에서 가장 인기 있는 오픈 소스 중 하나입니다.

쿠버네티스에 의해 가동되는 컨테이너 기반 애플리케이션 아키텍처는 대규모 스케일 사용에 적용되어왔으며, 새로운 클라우드 네이티브 애플리케이션 개발에 있어 업계 표준이 되었습니다. 하지만, 압도적 다수는 최신의, 그리고 최고의 클라우드 네이티브 기술을 이용하여 혁신하고 있는 동시에, 현대화가 요구되는 레거시 애플리케이션도 보유하고 있습니다.

현대화의 기본 패턴은 온프레미스, 프라이빗, 퍼블릭 클라우드 등 어디서든 실행되는 애플리케이션을 통합하여 클라우드로 쉽게 전환하기 위해 하이브리드나 멀티 클러스터 접근 방식을 최대한 활용하는 것입니다. 본 강연에서는 쿠버네티스 멀티 클러스터를 활용한 주요 현대화 전략과 이스티오 서비스 메시 기능에 관해 설명합니다. 그런 다음 레거시 샘플 애플리케이션을 쿠버네티스로 구동하고 이를 모두 오픈 소스 기술을 기반으로 스택을 유지 관리하는 멀티 클러스터를 통해 서비스와 통합하는 실제 데모로 들어갑니다.
